Being in Aussieland for over 2 months now (during which I saw India kick Aussie ass in 20-20 cricket!) I've observed a few things.
One of which is how the accents of people of different nationalities change over time.
I've seen, perhaps the people I saw were exceptions, that the accents of Indians change extremely fast.
There are people from Uganda, Maldives, China, Singapore, Taiwan, Bangladesh etc etc and I find that most of them have their original accents. Maybe I'm wrong and their current accents are actually widely different from their original accents. But still the "Aussieness" hasn't crept into their accent to such an extent.
I mean, some people I know don't even speak correct english. YET they have an accent. Which is so strange.
Is it that Indians want to desperately fit in the new world? Are they ashamed of their Indianness? What is the reason for this?
I spoke to my uncle here and he said that maybe the Indian accent is more prone to adaptation. Which could also mean that Indians adapt very well in foreign circumstances.
I'd like your view. It can be possible that the few "specimens" I've observed are special cases.
I somehow haven't changed my accent one bit. On the contrary I think I speak with a heavier Indian accent than I speak with back home ;)
Do comment. Love to hear from you.
